[Posted by Dave Haber on Wednesday, 11/19/08 4:39 pm] [Permalink] [Digg This]A Hofstra University professor who studied yoga with George Harrison will lead a tribute concert to the late Beatles guitarist on Friday on the school's Hempstead, NY campus. Joshua M. Greene, a Hinduism instructor, is author of the Harrison biography "Here Comes the Sun," which lends its name to the live event.
"Here Comes the Sun" is timed to the seventh anniversary of Harrison's death and focuses on his spiritual interests. It is part PowerPoint presentation, part live concert, with photo and video clips of the guitarist punctuated by performances of his best-known work, played by members of the Alan Parsons Project band, among them classic rock mainstay Godfrey Townsend and three Long Island musicians, Tommy Williams, John Montagna and Mike Bellusci.
The presentation takes place on Friday, November 21, at 8 p.m., at the Monroe Lecture Center Theater at Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Sign up at Hofstra's website. For information about this event, call 516-463-5840.

Fab Fan Christmas wish-list: Beatles Monopoly game

This was great news for younger Beatles fans, but for people who grew up listening to the Beatles, there's also a Beatles game that's a little more traditional.
The Beatles Collector's Edition of Monopoly is like the Monopoly board game you know, love and remember, except in this one, instead of building a financial and real estate empire, you build your own musical anthology by collecting all the Beatles albums from Please, Please Me through Let It Be.
Players travel around the board with six collectable pewter tokens created especially for this version of the game. Pictured above, they are, from top to bottom and left to right, Here Comes The Sun, Octopus's Garden, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Rocky Raccoon, Strawberry Fields Forever and I Am The Walrus.

Paul McCartney:The Space Within Us on Blu-Ray next Tuesday

Paul McCartney: The Space Within Us, captured using more than 25 hi-definition cameras and 5.1 digital surround sound, will be available for the first time on Blu-ray next Tuesday, November 18.
This best-selling concert film features live performances of over over 30 hits from Paul McCartney, Wings and The Beatles and special features including an innovative interactive jukebox where viewers can create their own concert playlists. Firefall Acoustic pays tribute to the Beatles
[Posted by Dave Haber on Thursday, 11/13/08 7:19 pm] [Permalink] [Digg This] Remember the song "You Are The Woman" by Firefall from 1976? That was one of my most favorite records of the late 70's.
Well, singer and lead guitarist Jock Bartley from the original Firefall has gotten together with Steven Weinmeister to form Firefall Acoustic, which was born during an appearance on a Colorado radio station in 2005, when they were asked to perform some Beatles songs. That appearance had such a positive response that Jock and Steven decided to record a whole album of Beatles songs, and it is now available.
The CD, Colorado to Liverpool: A Tribute to the Beatles, doesn't contain the biggest hits you'd expect groups to cover. Instead, they picked "album cuts", songs they grew up on in the 1960s, songs they learned how to sing harmonies with, songs as Steven has said, "that are in our DNA." Songs like Girl, Norwegian Wood, I'll Be Back, You're Gonna Lose That Girl and No Reply.
Some of the songs are simple and sound like they're playing them in your living room, and some, like Eleanor Rigby, they took in new and interesting directions. If you liked the Firefall of the late seventies, and you're a Beatles fan, I think you'll like this new CD!

Rare performance of Ecce Cor Meum this Saturday
[Posted by Dave Haber on Wednesday, 11/12/08 8:11 pm] [Permalink] [Digg This] This Saturday night, the Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra concert will feature the Pennsylvania premiere of Paul McCartney's oratorio "Ecce Cor Meum" ("Behold My Heart"), a five-movement work written in Latin and English, and scored for orchestra, boys and adult choirs, and organ.
"Ecce Cor Meum" is not often performed, mostly because of its newness, but also because it's a major commitment to stage, requiring two choirs, orchestra and organ. Its American premiere was Nov. 14, 2006, at a sold-out Carnegie Hall.
"What struck me about the piece is its variety of musical styles, and fine choral writing," says Sinfonia conductor and music director Allan Birney. "It's upbeat, with hints of British Broadway in it. But it's no cakewalk -- it has its challenges. I look at it as a very substantial oratorio."

Beatles win WMA Diamond Award
[Posted by Dave Haber on Monday, 11/10/08 10:02 am] [Permalink] [Digg This] The World Music Awards were given out in Monaco last night. On behalf of his old band The Beatles, Ringo Starr was in Monaco to accept the WMA Diamond award.
The WMA Diamond award was created in 2001 to honor artists who have sold more than 100 million albums during their career.
According to the WMA, the Beatles have sold more records than any other act in history, with music sales estimated by their label at more than 1 billion records worldwide.
Pattie Boyd appearing in New York City tomorrow

City Hall with an official resolution from Councilman Tom LaBonge, who also orchestrated the council's proclamation of "Brian Wilson Day" in Los Angeles. The council will salute the Breakfast with the Beatles radio show for its 25 years on the air in L.A.

Breakfast with the Beatles is the longest running Beatles show in America, on 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles, hosted by Beatles expert Chris Carter. Chris took over the show seven years ago after the show's originator, Deirdre O'Donoghue, and often pays tribute his predecessor on the air.
Chris says, "I will be dedicating this all to Deirdre, as I'm just carrying the Beatle torch."
