Mitzi Gaynor remembers American Beatlemania [Posted by Dave Haber on Friday, 07/18/08 11:35 am] [Full Blog] [Digg This]South Pacific is being revived on Broadway, and in a recent interview, the star of the movie version, Mitzi Gaynor, remembered the time she was on the same Ed Sullivan Show with The Beatles, in Miami, on February 16, 1964, their second appearance in America. She said:
"When Ed first told me about them in '63, he described them as a Liverpool rock 'n' roll group. I had never heard of them. They became famous between then and the '64 show.
"We were all staying at the Deauville in Miami Beach. It was absolute madness. Girls were trying to climb over the rocks onto the beach and scale the walls of the hotel. I just thought they were fabulous, these four adorable moppets. And their music was amazing.
"Before the show, I would get phone calls at 2 in the morning from people I hardly knew asking me to get their autograph for their aunt."
When asked if she got their autographs, she replied, "No. I didn't want to bother them. But Paul asked me for mine. He's a real gent."
